Starter motor solenoid electric current draw. Starter motor solenoid current draw. I know itdue south been asked before but I tint find an answer. My immobiliser will handle a max of 18A. Volition the solenoid draw more 15A? Starter is from a 2L dohc sierra. Any ideas ?

I'd estimate anything up to 20 Amps? You lot can work it out if your multimeter is accurate at low resistance. And so dissever 12(volts) by the resistance (ohms) volition give y'all the electric current. My guess volition exist that it is less than 5 ohms as they are quite potent on a car starter

I have a 20A meter at home in lynn. Will be back later today if you want to infringe it to endeavor, you are welcome to pop over tomorrow or this later this afternoon if so. You tin also borrow the synchro for a while as well. David Sera http://www.motosera.com

I don't think the solenoid alone volition draw much more than 10A ...... just that is only my theory and then don't take that equally gospel Cheers, Raz When thinking outside the box doesn't work any more than, it'south time to build a new box

Answered my own question Turns out my meter is beter than I remebered. The respond is merely over 10A

Blimey! I must be cleverer than I idea! Cheers, Raz When thinking outside the box doesn't work any more, it'southward fourth dimension to build a new box

I know the solenoid is only a relay but it has a heavy duty cable running to it in the Sierra. The cable is simply a thin one to the solenoid, the thick cable is to the starter later the solenoid has thrown in. yours, Pete I went into the RSPCA office the other day. Information technology was and so small you could inappreciably swing a true cat in in that location.

Yes it sure is Pete. But the solenoid wire is heavy duty for 10A

May not be and so piece of cake to check. I call up near starters has two solenoid windings. One for pull in, high current, and one for holding, low current. The pull in electric current is then only present for a very short menstruation, < 1s, and not then easy to messure. Dont know the pull in current, but would gauge around 20A.

As far every bit I know nigh Ford solenoids only take the one coil (at least my Duratec has anyway) A dual winding ringlet system would probably require ecu control wouldn't it? Cheers, Raz When thinking outside the box doesn't piece of work whatever more, it's fourth dimension to build a new box

if y'all don't accept a meter just try different size fuses and see which ones blow. Not the cheapest way but a simple work around.

No ECU needed for dual coils. The pull in roll is disconnected internally equally the solenoid reach the end position and the starter starts cranking.

Ah I see. And then you might have 20A for 0.1 seconds, then 10A while the starter is turning. Thank you, Raz When thinking outside the box doesn't work whatsoever more, it'south fourth dimension to build a new box

Correct, but the ratio between pull in current, and hold-current would normally be bigger than 2:ane. More like four:1.
